Rye Harbour

Avian highlight this morning was a Red Kite at Castle Water, the bird gave fantastic views on the ground near the hide and in flight over the main pit and was mobbed by a Common Buzzard and Marsh Harrier. Additional interest was provided by Great White Egret Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail, Sedge and Reed Warbler. Feeding over the north end of the pit were Swift (5), Swallow, Sand and House Martins. The willows in flower in the sheltered areas around the viewpoint attracted several Buff-tailed Bumblebees and the hoverfly Eristalis intricarius which comes in three colour forms and is a good bumblbee mimic. On the Beach Reserve pick of the bunch this morning included 38 Avocet, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 6 Whimbrel and an Arctic Skua over Shore Ridges.
