RX Bird Race-Slow But Sure...

The Slow But Sure birdrace team set off from Fairlight at 6 am and walked up to Hastings Country Park NR, hearing Tawny Owls in the village and flushing a Ring Ouzel in the half light at Firehills-a typical not-seen -again dawn sighting. As usual we walked as far as Place Farm in order to get Pheasant, then returned noting at least 30 Skylarks moving and a Dartford Warbler at Firehills below Coastguards.  Finch migration remained light-a few groups of Linnets and Goldfinches, a lone Siskin but still no Redpolls. However, a party of 10 Tree Sparrows moving E along Fairlight Cliffs was noteworthy.Nothing doing at sea. Thereafter our route was through Market Wood and along the seawall to Rye Harbour NR, with various diversions, ending up soaking wet in increasingly heavy rain at the Bittern viewpoint at 1700. 15 miles according to the GPS.

Highlights were the obliging Snow Bunting [found the previous day] at ramp 4,a close in raft of 60 Common Scoters off Winchelsea Beach and 6 Greenshanks on the Ternery Pool; absentees were Tree Creeper and Marsh Tit in Market Wood, and Water Rail which refused to squeal at the viewpoint.

Our total was 96 species, so well done to the Pannel Beaters, it all goes to show, once again, what a great area this is for birds.
