Rye Harbour

Notable sightings over the last few days have included Dartford warbler behind Ternery Pool, black-necked grebe and up to six ruff on Ternery Pool itself (with at least one additional black-necked grebe on Long Pit occasionally), adult male red-breasted merganser on Flat Beach and regular great white egret at Castle Water and on Narrow Pit. There are still good numbers of golden plover around on the Beach Reserve and Harbour Farm, with up 2000 present in the last few days, along with several hundred lapwing and smaller numbers of black-tailed godwit, bar-tailed godwit, knot, grey plover and dunlin. This avian 'smorgasbord' has attracted the attention of several species of raptor, with marsh harrier, peregrine and sparrowhawk all recorded here in the last few days.
