Rye Harbour

Highlights over the last few days have been perhaps two adult male red-breasted merganser on the Beach Reserve (with birds seen on Ternery Pool and the Quarry), black-necked grebe on Ternery Pool and great white egret and marsh harrier at Castle Water. There was also another sighting of Dartford warbler on 28th December (photo by Ian Stewart who also saw and photographed one nearby in late November). Still good numbers of golden plover with around 1500-2000 on Flat Beach Level, while up to 225 curlew have been seen leaving the roost on the new saltmarsh opposite Lime Kiln Cottage.

The best of the bunch  have been five black-throated diver (along with many red-throated diver) and 12 velvet scoter seen offshore on the 2nd by Mike Russell.
