The Potato Walk

With yesterday being a rainy write-off, and today looking the same, I will go back two days to Friday, when a nice bit of weather forecasting enabled Slow but Sure to enjoy one of our regular walks. Named after an act of generosity by one of the local farmers -"take as many as you want ", -this circular walk starts at Dennes Lane, Lydd and is about 7 miles.

Almost immediately we picked up some promising looking geese flying towards us-these  proved to be 78 Whitefronts, while near Newlands Farm were 4 Bewicks Swans, and the first of at least two Great White Egrets. We had no luck with Hen Harriers, but did see Peregrine, Sparrowhawk and several Buzzards, smaller birds were c400 Fieldfares feasting  on the abundant hawthorn berries, and ten or so each of Tree Sparrow and Corn Bunting. Two late Common Darters were buzzing around the buildings at Little Scotney. At Scotney Gravel Pits there were 2 Green Sandpipers near the farm buildings-we didn't have time to go to the western pits, but the two Whoopers were stll there.
