Three Chats next week?

This morning the beach reserve was full of young yellow wagtails and meadow pipits and later at Castle Water there were many young whinchats (above) and wheatear. In the coming week it should be possible to see 3 species of chat - stonechat, whinchat and wheatear

Pale green haze

There is only one flowering plant that grows below the height of winter storms on the exposed shingle shore... and this is Babbington's Orache. In some years it can be very scarce and in others abundant - this year it is patchy and the pale green haze can be seen just west of Ternery Pool. It is quite similar to Spear-leaved Orache, but it is mostly prostrate and for me its position so low on the shore is a give away.

Beach Reserve

Not much too add to yesterdays post, but this morning there were three Black Terns flying around the Quarry (Denny Hide) and then Ternery Pool, a Peregrine was also present along Shore Ridges.

Painted Lady

Not seen many of these butterflies this season, my second one this year was feeding on the Buddleia at Lime Kiln this morning.

Rye Harbour

Good selection of birds around this morning highlights have been 5 Whinchat, 2 Redstart, 2 Wood Sandpiper and 11 Grey Partridge on Harbour Farm. Flat Beach atrracted 3 Little Stint, 4 Black-tailed Godwit and 3 Ruff. At Castle Water good numbers of Sand Martin were present around both pits, out from the hide on the nearest islands 2 Garganey, Wood Sandpiper, 3 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Little Stint showed well. Several Common Sandpiper were around the margins at each end of the main pit. From the viewpoint a Spotted Flycatcher gave good views perched in the nearby willows and a Marsh Harrier flushed 22 Snipe. Flocks of small birds around the site have included Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Linnet, House Sparrow(80+ near Lime Kiln along the fence) and Meadow Pipit.
