Ringed Plover v Common Tern

In this photo (also from the Denny hide) there are 2 common terns and 2 ringed plovers. The right hand tern was trying to make its nest too close to the plover's - you can see the plover eggs to left of that tern. So the ringed plovers attacked the intruder and eventully saw it off.

Oystercatcher v Herring Gull

Sit in a hide at Rye Harbour for half an hour and you will probably see some fighting, bullying and even predation. At the Denny hide today a herring gull swooped down and took an oystercatcher chick but its battling parents made no difference... the herring gull won 1:0.

I came across several of these rather nice solitary bees while looking for Limobius mixtus at Castle Water yesterday. My attention  was drawn to them by their high pitched buzz and striking green eyes.

Mullein moth

My favourite caterpillar has to be the mullein moth, usually found feeding on the "woolly" leaves of greater mullein, but I did recently see one on water figwort.

Emperor Dragonfly
